Herbert List (1903-1975) was a German photographer who is mainly known for his seemingly archaic and surreal black and white photographs. His unique way of highlighting his motifs while not always paying attention to technical perfection influenced many photographers in his time as well as modern photography in general. Owing to his natural talent, List already exhibited in Paris and worked for several magazines at an early stage of his career. During World War II, List was stationed in Norway as a soldier, where his photographs of desolate and ruined cities were taken. After the war, he traveled frequently to Greece, Italy, France and to the Caribbean, where he took photographs later featured in popular books.
