from the series: Famous places in Edo (Koto meisho)

Utagawa or Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858) was, together with Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Utagawa Kunisada, the most important ukiyo-e woodblock print artist of the Edo-period. He was a member of the Utagawa-school and specialized in masterfully crafted depictions of landscapes, which made his works sought after both in his time and today. His works also influenced impressionism in Europe, artists like Vincent van Gogh were fascinated by his prints. Hiroshige’s most famous series is “100 famous views of Edo”, which he himself addressed as his magnum opus.
