Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) was, at his time, one of the most influential and successful Japanese woodblock print artist of the ukiyo-e style and designed around 20.000 woodblock prints. Like Utagawa Hiroshige and Utagawa Hiroshige II, Kunisada was a member of the Utagawa-school. Temporarily, Kunisada and Hiroshige II worked on woodblock prints together, like on the series “Pride of Edo”. During this cooperation, Hiroshige II created the landscapes while Kunisada focused on the people and characters.
